The American Institute of Conservation (AIC) published a code of ethics and guidelines for conservation professionals involved in caring for cultural artifacts. Book and paper conservators strive to be sure that the treatments and alterations applied to the artifacts are reversible so they can be undone.

Biological Conservation is a leading international journal in the discipline of conservation science. The journal publishes articles spanning a diverse range of fields that contribute to the biological, sociological, ethical and economic dimensions of conservation.

Conservation of cultural heritage involves protection and restoration using "any methods that prove effective in keeping that property in as close to its original condition as possible for as long as possible." Conservation of cultural heritage is often associated with art collections and museums and involves collection care and management through tracking, examination, documentation.

Conservation may include re-housing in custom-designed enclosures, basic stabilization or complex conservation treatment and rebinding. Treatment options are based on a complete examination of the artifact, its intended use and how it will be stored.
